Hay Fever

An allergic disease which includes the inflammation of the nasal passages’ lining is called the Hay Fever disease. In the medical terms, the disease is known as allergic rhinitis. This term includes two conditions: perennial allergic rhinitis and seasonal allergic rhinitis. Seasonal allergic rhinitis is referred to as the disease which is commonly occurred among people who claim that they have hay fever. This condition is aggravated by seasonal irritants such as the pollens. But, a large amount of overlap is there amongst the perennial, seasonal or all the year round allergic rhinitis. The major symptoms of both the conditions of allergic rhinitis include:

  • Itching
  • Sneezing
  • Congestion in the nasal passages

The inflammation of this kind is due to the allergens which are the foreign objects that get into the body via mouth, nose and throat.

There is an over active immune system of the people who suffer from the problem of hay fever. Particularly the level of antibodies in them is elevated. It is due to this that hay fever is lined with eczema, asthma and sinusitis because all of these have the same underlying cause. When allergens like pollen and dust get into the body, the body produces antibodies which lead to the production of a chemical known as histamine. This further leads to swelling, itching and the production of mucous in the nose lining and in the nasal membranes which lead to a condition like cold. Some of the common symptoms of hay fever are:

  • Running nose having watery fluid or blocked nose
  • Sneezing episodes
  • Sore throat
  • Red, watery or puffy eyes
  • Sinus pain
  • Husky voice
  • Itchy cough

Similar to the nasal conditions, the symptoms for allergic rhinitis include the sinusitis and nasal polyps. Due to this fact, it is essential to visit a doctor for the confirmation whether you are suffering from hay fever or some other disease. As mentioned previously, the disease of hay fever can be throughout the year or it can be seasonal. This depends on the kind of allergies to which the people are sensitive. The major causes for seasonal allergic rhinitis are:

  • Grass
  • Pollen

The major causes for the hay fever all year round are:

  • Fungi
  • Dust mites
  • Mould spores
  • Cockroach droppings

As per the treatment of hay fever, the medications which are prescribed the most include the antihistamines, corticosteroid nasal sprays and decongestants. The corticosteroids aid in reducing the itching, inflammation and the runny nose. The antihistamines control the sneezing, itching and runny nose but they make people drowsy. The decongestants make the nasal passages free.

There are certain remedies for this disease which can be done at home. These include avoiding such things which trigger allergies in your body. Sometime this thing is difficult to identify. Secondly, one can wash his nose with saline which will help prevent inflammation in the nasal lining. This will also help in washing the mucous and debris from the nose.
